What is Oral Systemic Disease?

Oral systemic disease refers to any damage or disease caused to the body as a result of pathogens within the mouth.  These pathogens are typically introduced to the system as a result of periodontitis, gingivitis, 

and gum disease.  Once in the body, an inflammatory reaction is initiated.  These inflammatory cascades

are currently being studied to decrease, or block their damaging actions.  The consequences of these problematic bacteria include but are not limited to; heart disease, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and diabetic control issues.  The medical profession is aware of the oral-systemic connection, and the serious consequences of these pathogenic bacteria.  As further evidence continues to surface, public awareness is at an all time high with regards to these issues.
